Jeán et Joie's "Bramble" Weaves Nature and Faith Into Nine Folk Songs

The independent folk group Jeán et Joie, led by artist and songwriter Grey Jeán, has released "Bramble," a nine-track album of roughly 31 minutes built on simple instrumentation and reflective, poetic lyrics. The record came out on September 18, 2026, and is available on Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp. According to the press release, the group is based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Themes and sound

According to the release, "Bramble" draws on natural imagery, spirituality and personal experience, delivered through what the material describes as stream-of-consciousness storytelling. The opening track, "MA," is an acoustic folk piece, while "Glory Be" adds electric and acoustic guitar, piano, bass and drums in a minor-key setting with a downtempo 6/8 feel.

The album shifts its texture as it goes. "Greatness Can Wait" moves from soft piano into a funky indie-pop arrangement with a bass groove, and "Dissolution," the longest track, adds heavier instrumentation and haunting harmonies. "AGE" features oboe within a folk setting, and the closing track, "Fried Rice," returns to the acoustic singer-songwriter approach.

The artist's background

The source material says Grey grew up in a musical household shaped by sibling harmonies and the polyphonic hymns of the family's Catholic faith. Grey began writing original music during a difficult adolescence in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Their development included choirs, open mic nights, live performances and virtual concerts during the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, Grey played and wrote piano pieces for the San Diego punk blues band Teeming Dreams, and Jeán et Joie was formed in 2022.

What listeners can expect

Grey described the record as an extension of recurring writing interests: "the natural world, spirituality and lived experience." The album's compact length lets listeners hear all nine songs in one sitting, though the release is promotional in tone and offers no independent critical assessment of its artistic reception.
