Multan Reopens Its Century-Old Library With a New Café and Reading Room

Multan's historic Municipal Public Library has been restored and paired with a contemporary library café, giving the city a new gathering place for reading, local history and public debate. The inauguration drew provincial officials, civic leaders, writers and academics, and the project is presented as a way to keep a heritage building in active public use.

Restoring the Building While Keeping Its Character

Member of the Provincial Assembly Salman Naeem praised the commissioner's vision and said the combined library and café will offer residents and visitors a window into Multan's cultural identity. He emphasized that the structure's original architectural integrity has been preserved during the work.

Commissioner Aamir Kareem Khan said the idea emerged during a review of restoration work at Qasim Fort. He framed the project around two goals: revitalizing historic landmarks and encouraging a reading habit among younger residents. Industrialist Khawaja Jawad, who also attended, credited the preservation effort with maintaining the building's authentic character and said safeguarding heritage is essential to the city's historical identity.

A Dedicated Space for Exam Candidates and Scholars

The commissioner announced a dedicated section for candidates preparing for competitive examinations. It will hold around 700 books, more than 200 of which have already been donated by philanthropists. A digital catalog is under development, and officials are considering special concessions for scholars and writers, though details of those concessions were not specified at the event.

Plans Beyond the Reading Room

  • A food court and craft bazaar are also being developed within the complex.
  • Writers and academics present at the ceremony personally donated books to the collection.
  • The digital catalog and reader concessions remain works in progress at the time of the inauguration.

Because the reports come from the inauguration ceremony itself, the library's long-term use, collection growth and the timeline for the remaining amenities will depend on how the plans are carried out in the months ahead.
